The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in subjects such as mathematics, reading, science, and writing. Depending on the year, assessments focused on technology literacy and social studies may also be administered. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card. NAEP serves a different role than state assessments. States have their own unique assessments with different content standards. The same NAEP assessment is administered in every state, providing a common measure of student achievement. In 2023-2024, Denver Public Schools will participate in the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) component of NAEP. Only select schools and students will participate.

Families who wish to excuse their student from participation in one or more of the state assessments may do so by filling out the district’s opt-out application in Parent Portal from October to February. You may still opt out by scheduling an appointment with your principal or AP and request the Assessment Participation Exemption form to be printed off for you to sign (if your student has not begun taking tests). You may also write a letter and bring it with you to the meeting. If you have more than one child, you will need to fill out the form or write a letter for each child to opt out.

We encourage our students to participate in all assessments because they provide valuable information to families and educators that show whether students have mastered grade-level content and are on track to graduate prepared for the 21st century. Results from these assessments inform where Denver Public Schools can improve curriculum, instruction and leadership in order to ensure that every child receives an equitable education and is on a path to success.

The NAEP administration window is from the last week of January through mid-March. Students will spend approximately 90 to 120 minutes on the assessment. The assessment is only given to 50 students from the entire school.

A testing window is a period of time where some students may test on some days and receive instruction on others. Students do not test during the entire window. They also only participate in one content area. For specific test dates for your student, please check with your child’s teacher.
